Our first Make-A-Wish Night at the Warriors on February 27 was a big success. Not only did everyone, including wish kid Frankie have a great time, the Warriors beat the Pistons!
For the second year in a row, Bay Area Jazzercise aficionados did a lively routine during half-time. Their challenge – learn a routine, collect pledges for Make-A-Wish and in return participate in the Warriors half-time festivities. Over 260 Jazzercisers joined in and raised $49,525 for our chapter, making their two-year total almost $100,000!! “I am so proud of everyone who participated to raise funds for such a worthy cause,” said Peggy Waide, District Manager, Jazzercise Inc. Also part of the evening was the unveiling of a dedicated Golden State Warriors S.H.A.R.E.S. card. Almost 8,000 cards were handed out by Make-A-Wish volunteers to Warriors fans at the end of the game. To date, we have received almost $24,000 from Lucky/Save Mart, just because people, with no obligation to them, have been swiping their S.H.A.R.E.S. cards at their supermarket check-out.
The best part of the evening, however, was 10-year-old Frankie’s wish to meet the Warriors, which was granted during the game. Frankie got to meet all of his favorite players, warmed up on the court with the team prior to the game, received a basketball autographed by the entire team and got a behind-the-scenes tour of the locker room. Although he had a hard time determining his favorite part of the wish, he was truly stunned when Monta Ellis offered him a pair of his own shoes, right out of his locker. According to Frankie’s father, “Being out on the court with the players before the game, and being treated so warmly by them, was an absolute high for him. Basketball is his passion, and the players are his role models. We couldn’t have wished for a better group of people to deliver so generously of their time and care.” And for the best part for his dad? “Seeing him being well enough to enjoy the experience was priceless for me.”
